8. Richard Compton was born in 1800 in MS. He died in 1868 in Mississippi. Compton, Richard D047

1800: Born, son of Stephen Compton, who was then aged 19 (mother's name unknown). He apparently had one older brother as noted in the 1820 census, then 3 younger brothers and 5 younger sisters.

1820: U.S. Census of Mississippi lists Stephen Compton: "3 males under 10; 1 male 16-26 (probably Richard); 1 male 26-45; 2 females under 10; 3 females 10-16; 1 female over 45."

1827?: Married Polly Mary Brown.

1828: Daughter, Mary E. Compton, born; later married Christopher C. Campbell (born 1828).

1829: Living at Stampley Station, MS. Daughter, Sophie Emily Compton born on February 24. She married Samuel Thad Stampley (born 1829) on April 24, 1845, and Solomon B. Rowland (born 1818) on February 2, 1851 in Jefferson, MS; died March 19, 1908 in Franklin, Ms.

The 1880 census (pg 4, E.D. 61, Beat #2) lists "Alexander B. Compton, age 49, Farmer; wife Louise, 35; Meally, 20; Olla D, 14, Leaman 1 1/2." Another daughter, Ada, was born in 1880. Alexander died in 1912 and is buried in Hamburg, Franklin, MS.

1830: U.S. Census, Jefferson Co., MS: "Richard Compton; 2 males, 20-30; 1 female under 5; 1 female 20-30; 70 slaves, including 28 free colored." Other Comptons listed in Mississippi are: "Isiah in Warren Co.; James in Jones Co.; and Stephen in Jefferson Co."

1832: India Adelaide Compton, third daughter, born. She married Cicero Z. Stampley (born 1831). Their children were: Emitt, 1862, Cicero, Jr., 1866, Richard Z., 1867, and twins: Lavenia and Indiana, 1868.

1837 or 38: Son, Stephen, born; married Neomi?.

1840: Richard not researched, but U.S. Census of Jefferson Co., MS. lists "Stephen Compton with 1 male 20-30; 1 male 60-70; 2 females 10-15; 1 female 60-70. With 70 slaves." Also listed is William Compton, male 20-30. Also listed are: Mary Compton in Warren Co. with "1 male 40- 50; 1 female under 5; 1 female 10-15, 2 females 15-20; 1 female 40-50." Nancy Compton in Holmes Co.; and Thomas Compton in Madison Co.

1845: Son, Richard D. Compton, born. Apparently Polly Mary Brown died shortly thereafter and Richard married again, this time to Mary K (or U.) Brown. Mary was the daughter of Elijah Brown and Sarah (Sallie Kinniston). Her great-grandfather on her mother's side came from Germany.

1850: U.S. Census, Jefferson Co., MS: "Richard Compton, age 50; Planter, Real Estate value $3750; Wife Mary U., age 22; Alex, 19, Overseer; Sarah 18; Stephen, 13; Mary E.,8; Indian, 6; Richard Jr., 4." (Note contradictions with data on daughters, Mary, Sophie, and India, taken from Church of Latter-day Saints records) Listed next to W.M. Stampley, age 52, wife Ann, 42. Also to Jacob Stampley, 25; wife M.A., 22 (This Jacob is Grandfather of Bertha Stampley who later married Richard Compton's son, DeWitt.)

This census also lists the following Compton's in Mississippi: "Emma C., Madison Co.; James, Leake Co.; Jane, Carroll Co.; Jefferson, Washington Co.; Mabrella, Yazoo Co.;Martha J. Carroll Co.; Pickens, Washington Co.; Richard S. Madison Co.; Thomas A. Warren Co.; and Uriah in Washington Co."

Listed next to Jacob and Mabelle Stampley, with 2 children Samuel and Alice (This Samuel was Dewitt's later wife, Bertha's, father). This 1860 census also lists Stephen Compton in Jefferson County.

1861: Son, Overton Pickney, born; married Esther (born 1864). Their children were Overton, born 1892; Richard, 1894 (Note: Ethel Compton later said in 1991 that "Richard used to visit mama."), Henry, 1896; Fannie, 1899.

1870: U.S. Census of Adams County, Natchez Post Office, Mississippi: "Richard Compton, age 68; Mary U., 42; Jalone, 19; Clarence, 16; Dewitt, 14; Pickney, 9." Also this census lists Stephen and Will Compton in Jefferson County, Fayette Post Office.

1880: Richard apparently died before the Census of 1880. Listed in Jefferson County, Fayette Precinct (E.D. 62; Page 59): "Mary, age 52, Farmer; Jalone D, 28, Farmer; Dewitt A., 24, Farmer; Overton P., 19, Laborer, and John Bird, 14, Servant." This census also notes that Mary and her mother were born in Miss. and her father in Tennessee.

1900: U.S. Census of MS. lists: Overton Compton, 38; Esther 36, son, Overton, 8, Richard, 6; Henry, 4; Fannie, 1." Apparently Overton's mother, Mary died between 1880-1900. He is listed next to D. Ambrose Compton (his older brother), with his wife, Bertha, with 2 children, Mary D. and Alice.

Apparently sons Charles Clarence and DeWitt Ambrose moved to Louisiana before 1910. The 1910 U.S. Census of East Carroll Parish lists Bertha and her 6 children living with her brother-in-law, Charles Compton. Her husband, DeWitt, is not listed.

Hi Bruce!

Thanks for responding, this stuff gets kinda sticky
for some folks. I may have some limited information on
the Comptons--as it concerns their brief stay in the
Mer Rouge area...need to dig. They purchased Bell
Grove Plantation with Elijah Brown from Abraham
Morehouse in the early 1800's. Can I send you ged.com
files---if so I will gladly forward data I have on
Elijah's family.

James Barlow, Josiah Davenport and Elijah W. Brown
were three of the leading pioneer figures in the Mer
Rouge area, and mostly everyone there, white and some
blacks are their descendants. James Barlow came from
Kentucky right after the La. Purchase and his
daughter, Mary "Polly" Barlow, married Josiah
Davenport, who had just retired from a seafaring life.
Three of four of their descendants married the
children of Elijah Brown. Both the Brown and Barlow
name has all but disappeared in the Morehouse Parish
area, but their descendants, principally the
Davenports, own just about everything in town. The
picture, from our side of the track, gets even more
complicated, because the "mulatto" children of these
folks, then married each other. So most of my cousins
and I share multiple sets of common ancestors!
I would really like to know more about Elijah W.
Brown, nothing I've found mentions his folks, seems as
if he just popped up in Mississippi from nowhere, and
from what I'm told, he was not a part of the other
colonial Mississippi/Louisiana Brown family.

There seems to be a ton of Guice/Kennison data
floating around---what do you need/want? I probably
have kids of Christoher and Margaret Plowhead Guice
and kids of Priscilla Guice and Nathaniel Kennison.
Plus lots of misc. notes on migrations, land
transactions and the like. I even have a couple of
sacramental records from the Opeleusas
Poste---documenting a or some Kennison births. Don't
want to send anything you already have---tell me what
you're interested in recv'g.

From what I read the Guice descendants seem to be a
very proud people---who claim an illustrious lineage--
all I know is the common Guice stories that seem to
abound everywhere---especially on their site. I
probably have copies of similar (Kennison) land
transactions and few other docs on them.

Glad to hear from you.
