FOURTH GENERATION

12. Alexander Louis "Cap" DeBlieux was born on 11 May 1850 in Natchitoches LA. He died on 9 Aug 1918 in Natchitoches, LA. DeBlieux, Alexander Louis ("Cap") D001

1849: E. Valery DeBlieux signed a marriage contract with Aurore Metoyer on May 24 (See copy in file).

1850: Louis DeBlieux was born in May at Natchitoches. His birth was described by Lestant Prudhomme, brother of Julie, second wife of Valery, in his diary on Saturday--11th of May, 1850: "Having the news, by an express sent purposely, that Mrs. Valery (book prints 'Balery') Deblieux had been delivered of a fine boy, there was a salute of twelve or fifteen shots at Phanor's and I answered here." (This diary is included in OLD LOUISIANA, by Lyle Saxon, The Century Co., N.Y., 1929, p 215.)

Lestant Prudhomme's mother was a sister in law of "Madam Ben," who was the mother of Aurore, "Cap's" mother. The diary contains many references to visiting "Aunt Benjamin's" (Lestant's Aunt). The entry for Wednesday, May 15th, 1850 notes: "Mother remained again tonight at my aunt Benjamin's, my aunt not having returned from Grand Ecore where she has gone to see her daughter, Mrs. Balery Deblieux." (Grandmother was spending the night at the Willows Plantation with her daughter Aurore and her new grandson.)

His entry for Saturday, 18th, 1850 notes: "I left town with Felix Metoyer at about 10 A.M. to go at Mr. Balery Deblieux's. There was a pretty numerous company at the house, so the day was spent in a most pleasing way, and we saw the gentleman's first born (a boy). My aunt Benjamin...was there." (Grandmother apparently visited often)."

Records of Immaculate Conception Church, Natchitoches, confirm that Alexandre Louis DeBlieux was born on May 11, and baptised July 26, 1850. (Copy in file)

1850: U.S. Census of Natchitoches lists: "V. DeBlieux, age 30; Aurore, age 20; Louis 6/12..."

1855: His father married a second time to Julie Prudhomme, a cousin of Louis' mother, Aurore.

1860: Census of Natchotoches lists: "E.V. DeBlieux, age 40; Julia, age 30, A.L. (Alexander Louis), age 10, B.L, age 2 (Leon)." Apparently Louis lived with his father rather than his mother who did not die until 1975.

1870: Census of E.V. DeBlieux family includes "Alexander L., age 20," along with six of his step brothers and sisters.

1880: Census of Natchitoches lists: "A.L. DeBlieux, age 30; Retail Grocer," just above the E.V. DeBlieux family. Was he still living at home?

1887: Louis, better known as "Cap," age 37, was a merchant in Natchitoches; he fell in love with Mable Rosina Sompayrac, "a petite, beautiful, redhead," seventeen years old, twenty years younger than he. They were married on October 18. Witnesses to the marriage were A. Lambre Prudhomme, F.Albert Cloutier, E.A. Sompayrac, and John Dunckelman, uncles of the bride and J.J. Janin a great uncle by marriage. (Copy of license in file)

1889: First son, Honore Louis, was born on April 23, in Clarence, LA.

(Note: the Sompayrac side of the family apparently lost contact with Honore Louis. Their geneology which is quoted above and below says of Honore Louis: "Neither his marriage date nor the name of his wife is known, but according to a sister, now deceased, he was the father of six sons and six daughters as follows, not in chronological order: Henry, Robert, John, Walter, James, Onetha, Peggy, Lois, Aline, Mildred and Tina."

The Honore Louis DeBlieux side of the family also lost contact with the Sompayracs. When the Compton Family Geneology was compiled in 1987 there was no information on the Sompayracs other than the name of Rosina and limited data on 5 of the children of Cap and Rosina.

1892: Daughter, Gladys May, born on May 3, in Clarence. She married Louis J. Perot; daughter, Opal Perot.

1894: Daughter Leola was born in Clarence. She died young.

1896: Olive Erline was born on December 24. She married A.J. Donaldson in 1920; died Feb. 20, 1956.

1898: James Alvin was born on June 16. He married Annette Block; children: Alvin Jr. and Ann. Alvin Jr. children: Christopher and Vicki Lynn. James Alvin died 11/19/1963 in Natchitoches.

1901: Marguerite Mable, born October 29 in Clarence; married Felix Henry Landry, Jr. on 7/18/1923. Daughter named Rosina May, after her mother.

1902: Wife, Rosina Mae, died on June 26th. Marguerite says when she was 3 months old. Sompayrac records say when "Gladys Mae was about seven and the little family went to Natchitoches to make their home with their maternal grandmother, Mrs. Tennie Sompayrac. Tennie was, at that time, a widow with three grown sons at home. When she died in 1906, the father, Cap bought a home and built a small grocery store next door which he operated until his death in 1918. Gladys, the eldest daughter assumed responsibility for running the home with the help of the younger children. When she married, the next sister, Erline took her place. (See interview below for other information)

1918: Cap died March 9 "and is buried in a Natchitoches cemetary." (This quoted information from Sompayrac geneology in Northwestern Library, Natchitoches). Records of Immaculate Conception Church note: "Died on Aug. 9, 1918, A.L. DeBlieux and was buried the following day. Aged 73 years."

Death Certificate: Alexandre Louis DeBlieux, born 5/11/1850 on Cane River, died Aug. 2, 1918 @10:45 A.M., at Campti, of bright's disease; was Justice of the Peace; sonof E. Valery and Aurora DeBlieux.

One of Alexander Louis' half brothers, Jefferson Davis, was a Lawyer. "He ended up with everything in the family home." At a family reunion one of Alexander's children, Margaret, said: "Y'all just look cause you could have ended up with this."

1991: March 26; Interview with Mrs. Felix Henry Landry, Jr., 503 St. Francis, Lafayette, LA. (232-7966). She is Marguerite DeBlieux, aged 89, youngest daughter of Cap DeBlieux. These are her recollections: "Mama died when I was 3 months old. We went to live with my god-mother, Lisa Williams (her Mother's best friend). She took care of me just like her own daughter.
Later we moved to East Natchitoches in a little house next to Papa's store. It was Papa's money that sent me to college at Northwestern. Papa was reserved, very sober, a gentleman. Lisa told me all this. She said 'Your mother was so pretty; she liked to dance. Your Papa would stay home with the kids and let her go dancing.' Papa was strict with us though. I think they gave him the name Cap in Clarence." Referring to her father's step-brothers and sisters: "Papa was just trash in their eyes. He was just like a nobody. They snubbed us. We were just little, insignificant people. Family money was never divided equally; we got nothing. When we went to dinner at Aunt Stella's (Sompayrac, wife of Alex) they treated us bad. They never thought we were anything." About her oldest brother Honore Louis (father of Mable Lois): "Bubba liked me; he felt sorry for me when I couldn't climb in the attic like the others. He would pick me up and put me in; but then sometimes he would leave and I would have to wait till he got back. Bubba was Peck's Bad Boy; he was bad, the worse kid on the block. Once he got caught with matches in his pocket; they caught on fire when he was whipped. Once when he was working in Uncle Jeff's store he got mad one night about having to lock up late. He just went and threw the key in Cane River and quit. He was devilish. He left when he was about 15 or 16 and we never knew where he was for many years. I made a Novena for him. Later he showed up here at our house after I was married with 2 grown boys. We found out he had gone to Uncle Bud's (brother of Rosina, his mother) in Bartlesville, OK. Uncle Bud was Powell Sompayrac, a lawyer. I took Alvin to Bartlesville to see them when Alvin was 2." Mrs. Landry has a "beautiful picture of my mother" (Rosine Mae) hanging above her bed. She also has a table with marble top which belonged to her mother.
