EIGHTH GENERATION

154. Malcolm Clark was born in Londonderry, Ireland. "According to 'ABit of History and Some Recollections of Bamberg' by D. Graham Copeland, after his wife's death in Ireland, Malcolm Clark and his son Hugh emigrated to SC prior to the Revolution and settled on the South Edisto River in old Orangeburgh District. After clearing a farm, on which he established a general trading post, Malcolm worked as a surveyor for which there was great demant in the Colony. He became very prosperous and influential. Malcolm Clark was elected Justice of the Quorum of Orangeburgh District in 1774 and, in 1776, was commissioned Justice by President Rutledge.

"Malcolm convinced his only daughter, Mary, and her husband, Samuel Reed, to come to SC from Ireland with their children. Around 1780, Malcolm traveled to Charles Town from where he took passage on a sailing vessel to George Town to meet the ship upon which Mary was scheduled to arrive. A storm swept the coast, however, and it is believed all on board the sailing vessel Malcolm was on perished." (E. Reed Fickling, III) He was married to Mary about 1750 in Ireland.
