welcome to Hibiscus!

Hibiscus Bookstore dates to 1986 and has provided excellent support and service to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trangender communities in this part of the state since that time. When it first came into existence, it was located in the building (divided into four different sections) at the beginning of Main Street and the River Road. In fact, prior to the name Hibiscus, it was called Le Petit Musee du Baton Rouge making it even older since it first came about in the late 1970s. The museum featured Louisiana arts and crafts, books, food items, art displays/shows, photography exhibits, autograph parties, and was the home of the Louisiana Writers Guild and Le Comite des Archives de la Louisiane.

When the riverboats landed at the levee, the tourists would come over the levee and walk up Main Street. This was the first place they stopped on their visit to the Capitol City. Sometimes, complete groups would be brought over from the boat, especially those who chose not to take the regular tours of the city. After the new docking facility was built down by the Centroplex, there was no way to get the tourists to this little corner of Main Street, and the store changed directions at this point.

When the building at 635 Main Street became available, it was purchased, and all the material that had been in the store by the river was moved the five blocks down to the present location. It was then that those items not selling were phased out in lieu of those that were. Thanks to the support of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities, Hibiscus grew into the complex it is today. Working with local doctors and medical personnel, this bookstore was the first and only one that would offer items and information relating to HIV/AIDS. That early relationship is still in effect today. There are still Louisiana arts and crafts and lots of gifts for tourists, but the books are now geared to this special clientele, and other items have been added including leather supplies, jewelry, special giftables, and movies.

The motto has always been: "A Special Little Book Nook for Very Special People." It is because of you that it continues to grow.
